On April 26, AMOMED Pharma hosted an Advisory Board Meeting on Landiolol: State of the Art and Future in Cardiovascular Intensive Care Medicince. Physicians from Austria, France, Lithuania, Sweden, Italy, Poland and Slowakia gathered at the SO/ Hotel in Vienna to listen to reports about the use of landiolol – an ultra-short-acting, β1-selective intravenous adrenergic receptor antagonist – by two cardiologists from Japan.
Landiolol – A Track-Record of More Than 15 Years in Japan
The gathering was kicked-off by a welcome by AMOMED’s Head of International Medical Affairs, Dr. Houman Kamali, followed by an introduction of the topics through Dr. Alexander Niessner of the Medical University Vienna and Prof. Dr. Kurt Huber and of the Wilheminenspital hospital:
- Benefits of landiolol
- Indications for the use of landiolol
- Effects of ß-blockers
- Patient cases and patient profiles
- ESC-Guidelines for the management of atrial fibrillation
- Use of landiolol in cardiac surgery, non-cardiac surgery and with intensive care patients (i.e. under sepsis conditions)
- Clinical trials with landiolol
- Landiolol for heart attacks, heart failure & heart rate control
Practical experience with landiolol is still recent in Europe, therefore, we at AMOMED took the initiative and invited two experts from Japan, where landiolol has been on the market for more than 15 years, to share first-hand insights and give physicians from Austria and other European countries the opportunity to ask questions.
Prof. Dr. Motoi Okada, who works at the emergency medical center of Asahikawa Medical University, and surprised the participants with a welcome in German, gave a presentation on Cardiac Dysfunction and Atrial Fibrillation in the ICU: Current Experience with Landiolol in Japan.
Prof. Dr. Okada‘s talk was followed by a very lively debate about the options of using landiolol. In addition, the use of landiolol in combination with other substances (for example catecholamines) and the transition to oral beta-blockers was also discussed. Some European doctors on the Advisory Board also reported on their experiences with landiolol at their hospitals and were able to share observations.
After a short culinary break, Prof. Dr. Masaaki Konishi of Yokohama City University Medical Center, where he works at the cardiology division, stated his knowledge about Landiolol in Patients with Heart Failure and Myocardial Infarction (AIM). In his speech, he referred to the following studies:

Also this presentation closed with an animated debate – on the one hand about the general use of beta blockers by the physicians in attendance and on the other hand about the opportunity of a potential collaboration across Europe.
What Does the Future for Landiolol in Europe Look Like?
To add on to the reports of Prof. Dr. Okada and Prof. Dr. Konishi, three European experts – from Poland, Austria and Slovakia – shared their experiences with landiolol in critically ill patients. In particular, the combination of landiolol with levosimendan was mentioned.
Due to the similar experience of the physicians from Japan with those in Europe, the medical healthcare professionals who attended the meeting, said they would see landiolol as an option for treatment according to the specified indications.
