In the early 20th century, British statesman Winston Churchill mentioned in a speech: “Where there is great power there is great responsibility […].”1
A guiding principle that was not only taken over by many before and after him – including Spiderman – but has also been altered and adapted to suit many aspects of professional and public life.
As was the case for this year’s joint annual conference of the German Society for Internal Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DGIIN) and the Austrian Society for Internal and General Intensive and Emergency Medicine (ÖGIAIN) where Competence and Responsibility were discussed in the realm of internal intensive care and emergency medicine.
What’s New in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine?
The Estrel Congress Center in Berlin served as venue for the 3-day gathering in mid-June welcoming physicians, care personnel and a broad range of healthcare professionals from the intensive care and emergency medicine field. The theme of Competence and Responsibility centered around medical treatment. However, it was also debated in terms of science, research and continued education and training, while a specific focus was put on intensive care in the ER, interprofessional and interdisciplinary collaboration as well as specializations and qualifications of physicians and nursing staff in the ICU and emergency room.
During the conference, individual session and workshop-topics included:
- Ethics
- Reanimation and post-reanimation
- Definition and boundaries of therapeutic goals
- Diagnostic challenges in emergency and intensive care medicine
- Basic concepts in sepsis
- Arrhythmias
- Developments in emergency care
- Acute renal failure
- Acute heart failure and cardiogenic shock
- etc
